We all have self-doubt. You. Me. Everyone.
If you are a millennial and going through a quarter life crisis, you are probably feeling plagued by self-doubt and thoughts like these...
These self-limiting beliefs can feel very real especially if you have had a bad run with things not working out for you in the way you planned. So how can you get out of this negative headspace?
A helpful tool I use is the below diagram of two boxes. An inner box of SELF IMPOSED LIMITATIONS, and an outer box of ACTUAL LIMITATIONS.
An example of a real limitation is wanting to fly to the moon with your arms. Believing you can't loose 5kg in 5 weeks is a self-imposed limitation.
The aim is to have your inner box nudging the side of the outer box. You don’t want your own limiting beliefs to hold you back from achieving your goals.
So how can you overcome your self-doubt and limiting beliefs? Here are three tips that I've implemented and found helpful.
1. Look at your achievements
The reality is, you have achieved A LOT in your life. And some of these achievements are especially noteworthy.
If you want to increase your confidence and change your mindset from a negative to a positive one, write down 50 things that you have achieved in your life. Everything from learning to walk to graduating high school, or whatever your proudest moments are.
Filling your mind with your successes will empower you, and remind you that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. That you have faced adversity before and overcome it. And you can do the same again.
2. Know your WHY
They say if your motivation is strong enough you can achieve anything.
Where do people get their motivation from? It’s from having a WHY. Self-doubt comes from uncertainty and not being clear on what you want and why you want it. If you have a why, if you know why you want a career change, why you want to marry that person, than your determination will be much stronger. You will be able to smash through those barriers and challenges that will inevitably happen.

3. Research what you don’t know
So often people share their dream with me and I ask them what's holding them back and they respond, ‘I would love to do that but I don’t know how’.
Not knowing how to do something is the beginning of the journey to finding it out. Steve Jobs wasn't born knowing how to build a computer. Steven Spielberg wasn't born knowing how to be a great film director. They both knew what they didn’t know and found a way to find out. There is always a way. And especially in this day and age when knowledge and information are more accessible than ever before. So do some research, go online, read books, speak to people you know.
Self-doubt is often linked to our own self-imposed limitations, however that doesn’t take away the fact that it can be debilitating and block us from achieving what we want. We need to overcome the negative mindset with practical tips and strategies (such as those listed above) in order to overcome negative self-talk and self-doubt.
